Over 400 applications were submitted to various departments, funds, and contests. There were 143 contests with the participation of leading scientists, 270 with the participation of young scientists and students. 135 projects out of 400 have now received funding, over 300 projects won awards, prizes.

More than 500 projects are funded from public and non-public resources by contracts with factories and enterprises. 109 applications were sent by teachers and staff of BSTU to the Federal Institute of Industrial Property, industrial firms, and IT companies. There are 150 patents and certificates in the field of know-how.

V.G. Shukhov BSTU is one of the 100 best organizations in Russia in terms of the number of authors citing (50th out of 2,145 organizations), with the Hirsch index of 55, with almost 50,000 citations (14,000 in 2017) according to the results of the Russian Scientific Citation Index (RSCI).

"V.G. Shukhov BSTU Vestnik" journal is included in the list of peer-reviewed journals of Supreme Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation. It is recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russian Federation for scientific work publishing and it took 1494th place among 3465 scientific journals.

The total number of publications of the university in RSCI in 2017 was 20,015, the Hirsch index — 55, the number of citations — 41,016.

"V.G. Shukhov BSTU Vestnik" journal is included in the" List of Supreme Attestation Commission in four fields of study: 05.23.00 "Construction and Architecture", 05.17.00 "Chemical Engineering", 05.02.00 "Mechanical Engineering", 08.00.00 "Economic Sciences" All information is dated by June 15, 2017.

18 collections of scientific papers have been published; more than 1,800  scientific articles have been published in Russian journals and more than 200 — in the foreign ones. 89 monographs were published. More than 200 hundred conferences, meetings, seminars have been held on the in the institutes and departments of the University.

During 2017, students, graduates and young scientists of BSTU had been engaged in a number of projects that let them be noticed and gain public recognition and Russian Funds support.

3,300 people took part in the International Scientific and Technical Conference of Young Scientists of BSTU in May, where conferences were held on priority areas. The result was the publication of a collection of 1669 scientific reports.

As a part of the V Regional Science Festival, the IX International Youth Forum "Education. Science. Industry" took place in October 2017. About 4,000 students and young scientists participated. A collection of scientific papers has been published on 22 subjects, including 800 scientific reports. The Forum promotes the scientific, technical and innovation activity among youth, allows young scientists to show themselves and present their scientific ideas.

In 2017, 2 members of university academic staff got a degree of Doctor of Science and 16 members — Ph.D. 76 Ph.D. students and 3 Doctors of Sciences have been awarded a scholarship from the Governor of the Belgorod region; 3 Ph.D. students and 2 doctoral students - personal scholarships of the Governor of the Belgorod Region in honor of V. G. Shukhov; 17 post-graduate students and undergraduate students — scholarships of the President of the Russian Federation for their high achievements in science; 27 students — a scholarship of the Government of the Russian Federation.

60 innovation projects created by university students and young scientists were submitted to the contest "Member of the Youth Scientific and Innovation Contest-2017" (UMNIK), 30 works got to the final of the competition, and 4 best projects received a reward of 500,000 rubles for further development from the Foundation of the Innovation Promotion.

4,000 students and young scientists did a research work in 2017. At the moment, more than 2,469 articles have been published, about 570 research works participated in competitions for the best research; about 300 awards were received in competitions for the best research and in conferences.

A full-time scientific and practical webinar "High technology in the design of efficient nanomaterials" took place in the department of material science and engineering. It was attended by representatives of Russian and foreign universities. There were reports of young researchers who work at the BSTU and other universities and supervised by leading scientists. During the event, issues of the introduction of new technologies and new approaches to the development of modern materials and alloys were discussed. Such events are promising and constitute an integral part of the partnership for the maintenance and development of research work. There is also an exchange of experience in the realization of educational programs and application of research results in various fields.

On the 3rd of February a science conference "Additive technologies in construction and construction industry." The meeting was attended by leading scientists of the university, who are involved in the implementation of the research work "Development of a robotic complex for the implementation of full-scale additive technologies of innovative materials, composites, structures" within the federal target program "Research and development in priority areas for the development of scientific-technological complex of Russia for 2014–2020 years." The Head of Research is the Vice-Rector for Research, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor E.I. Yevtushenko. The results of research in the strategic development program of the university were reported at the conference. Additive technologies allow creating unique architectural structures, exclusive decorative elements, components of cars and machinery, molds for making small batches of products and repairing roads or unusual paving. Experts in various fields work on the project. They are materials scientists, chemical engineers, experts in the field of construction and road construction, mechanical engineers, professionals in the field of computer technologies, automated complexes, robotics and many others. Articles in scientific journals have been published in all these fields, research results are "protected" with evidence of know-how, or applied for Russian patent.

On the 27th of March the third vacation engineering school "Naukograd "NIKA" opened. Over one hundred creative, innovative thinking and active high school students from fifteen Belgorod schools took part in its work. "NIKA" is a result of collaboration between the university and the department of education of Belgorod. It has already helped many children to get research skills and to choose their future profession and university. Later the idea of vacation engineering schools was used by other universities. They created summer science innovation camps for school children in the region. The "NIKA" level of work was highly appreciated at the federal level. Within five days the students solved relevant scientific problems. Interesting tasks were created, mainly as games, quests, and debates. Trips to factories, as well as lectures and master classes, were organized.

On the 20th of April, a regional scientific and technical conference on the results of a competition of fundamental research in interdisciplinary fields by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) and the government of the Belgorod region was held in BSTU. During two days, the conference participants heard more than thirty scientific reports. It is held annually for the last three years already. Experts from a wide range of subject areas took part in the event. There were projects from areas like construction, architecture, material science, chemical technologies, and microelectronics. Visitors can learn about the latest developments of their colleagues, get new incentives for their own scientific search. The conference is funded by the RFBR and the local government.

On the 25th of April a conference on "The role of youth in solving environmental problems" within the 3rd annual youth festival in the field of ecology and sustainable development "VuzEcoFest — 2017" took place in Belgorod. The leaders of the regional and national festivals, members of the project "Active citizen", students of Belgorod universities and environmental scientists who work in BSTU came to the conference.

On the 19th of May, there was an interregional meeting of higher education institutions, dedicated to the implementation of the strategy of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation in BSTU. Among the participants were S.Y. Matveev, the Director of the Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, P.G. Gudkov, Deputy CEO of the Foundation for the Promotion of Innovation. Heads of twenty-three higher education institutions of Russia also took part in the meeting. It was held as part of the realization of the presidential program of the Russian Federation on the strategy of scientific and technological development of the country, which is designed to provide collaboration between science, business, and the state.

On the 28th of September, a seminar "Expanding borders. Open BIM — an interaction of architectural and engineering solutions" in BSTU brought together more than 200 architects and designers from Belgorod, Kursk and Rostov regions. The seminar turned into a nationwide forum, gathering leading experts of the construction industry engaged in the design, expertise, construction, and operation of buildings.

On the 28th of September, R.V. Starovoit, the head of the Federal Highway Agency visited the university. The discussion of the report "Experience of using BigData in the implementation of the project "Smart Roads" in the case of a weight control system" attracted wide attention. The report was given by F.E. Zhernov, the University's Associate Professor, the director of the "Information Technology Factory" Ltd. Following the meeting, the areas for cooperation in the field of road safety organization, in particular, the use of new information technologies to monitor the movement of freight transport had been defined.

On the 5th of October, the International online forum "Fundamentals of building materials" opened in BSTU in order to share best practices and further interdisciplinary research in the field of building material science. The event lasted until the 11th of October. In the end, the heads of subdivisions reported about the results of their work. During the forum the leading scientists of BSTU, people from different Russian cities and from universities in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Syria, Germany, Iraq, Palestine, China, Egypt, South Africa, etc. presented online their research.

From the 24th to 26th of October, BSTU in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation organized a science workshop "Students' taking part in providing comprehensive security, prevention of extremism, terrorism and anti-corruption actions in educational institutions." The event was attended by representatives of federal executive bodies, security services, and scientific, educational and public organizations. The program of the event included the review of relevant issues and development of means to increase the efficiency of student autonomous bodies in providing comprehensive security, crime prevention, shaping proactivity and patriotism among students.

On the 30th of October, 2017 the IV vacation engineering school "Naukograd" NIKA " opened in the university. It is a program of education outside the classroom via leisure activities to develop self-actualization among children. This program solves a number of relevant issues of the region concerning the creation of a skill pool for regional innovative development. More than 120 schoolchildren of the age of 14–17 years old from 15 schools of Belgorod took part in the event. They will become interns of 8 corporations. Children worked on real production tasks, "technocases" of leading innovative enterprises, which form economy of the region. In 2017 these enterprises were Belenergomash-BZEM Ltd, ZBK-1 Management Company, Graphisoft Company, Belgorodsky Cement CJSC, Altenergo, "KMP" Ltd, "Information Technology Factory" Ltd, "Shukhovs Motors" Ltd. One of the main objects of "Naukograd" is to involve as many talented young people in research and science, to begin preparing engineering-oriented, hardworking and persistent young people from school age. Participants of vacation schools learn not only new skills that are in a high demand in modern society, they form working relationships that unite schoolchildren, students, teachers, scientists, and businessmen.

On the 2nd of November, the eighth architectural and urban planning conference "Architectural Bridge: Belgorod-Moscow. New standards of housing and residential development of high-rise buildings property" opened. It was organized by the National Agency for Architecture and Urban Planning, the Department of Construction and Transport of the Belgorod Region and the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Belgorod government in collaboration with the regional flagship university.

On the 10th of November, the national Scientific Workshop "Development of Regional Strategies for the Training of Qualified Labour: Problems and Prospects" opened in BSTU. It was organized by the Department for Internal and Labor Policy of the Region in collaboration with ANO "Agency for Strategic Initiatives for Promotion of New Projects" and "Federal State Institute for the Development of Education." 130 participants from 12 regions of the Russian Federation gathered to discuss the implementation of the regional labor standard for the growth of industries, the development of a system for training qualified labor, the elaboration of the content of occupational education, considering national professional standards and "World Skills" requirements.

On the 15th of November, the III International Scientific and Technical Conference "Energy and Resource Saving, Eco-Friendly Chemical and Technological Processes for Environmental Protection" took place in the university. Issues concerning the development of energy and resource saving technological processes aimed at the sustainable use of natural resources, the waste recycling, protection of the environment from negative anthropogenic impact were discussed. Academic staff, post- and undergraduate students of BSTU, faculties of Russian and foreign universities joined the conference.

The II International Scientific and Technical Conference "Energy Systems" was held on 23rd24th of November. The main subjects of the conference were "Thermal engineering"; "Electrical engineering"; "Power Systems Engineering"; "Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency"; "Alternative and renewable sources of energy"; "Ecology of power engineering."

From the 29th of November to the 3rd of December, events within the program "Week of the Arrow" took place in BSTU, namely, lectures and workshops on urban environment development, cultural programming, interaction with urban communities, etc. Students, academic staff, bloggers, journalists, experts in urban environment design took part in it.

From the 13th to the 14th of December the Academic Forum "Flagship Universities - Drivers of Regional Development"  was organized in BSTU by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation in the collaboration with the National Training Foundation. The forum was visited by more than 1000 representatives of more than 100 Russian universities. As part of the forum, the results of the year on the development of the network of flagship universities in Russia and the priority project "Universities as centers of innovation" were reviewed. During the event, plenary sessions and discussion were held with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia and other federal executive bodies, heads of regions of the Russian Federation, development institutions, leading universities and experts. There were training and master classes for management staff of universities. Within two days, a special youth program for the development of design and entrepreneurship took place.

The winners of the 2018–2020 national presidential scholarship competition for the for young scientists and graduate students in the field "Energy Efficiency, including the Development of New Fuels", became 221 scientists, including 4 representatives of the Belgorod Flagship University:

  • Alexander Volodchenko, Associate Professor of the Department of Building Material Science, with the work "Development of technology of energy-efficient non-autoclaved silicate composites with modified properties using the aluminosilicate binders on technogenic raw materials and thermoactivated modifiers";
  • Marina Kozhukhova, engineer of the Scientific Research Institute "Nanosystems in building material science" (Department of Material Science and Engineering) with the work "Development of super-hydrophobic coating for durable road concrete of new generation in conditions of maximum resource saving operation";
  • Natalia Kozhukhova, Associate Professor of Material Science and Engineering Department with the work "Development of energy-efficient heat-resistant cement-free composites for building purposes using aluminum silicate industrial waste”;
  • Mariana Sivalneva, Associate Professor of Material Science and Engineering Department with "Development of principles for maintenance of qualitative indicators of cellular composites produced on the basis of cement-free mineral binding systems".

The winners of the 20182020 national presidential scholarship competition for the for young scientists and graduate students in the field "Strategic Information Technologies, including the issues of creating supercomputers and software development" were 101 participants, among them Dmitry Bukhanov, senior lecturer of the Department of Computer Software and Automated Systems with his work "Development of a method for identifying scumware on the basis of adaptive resonance theory."

The winners of the 2018 contest for the state support of young Russian scientists, PhD candidates in the field "Technical and engineering sciences" were 86 people, including Victoria Nelyubova, an Associate Professor of the Material Science and Engineering Department of BSTU with the work "Development of generalized principles for controlling the structure formation of cellular composites of autoclave and non-autoclaved types of hardening at various technological stages."

The winners of the 2018 competition for state support of leading scientific schools in the field "Technical and Engineering Sciences" were 8 scientists, including Valeria Strokova, Professor of the Material Science and Engineering Department in BSTU with her work "Development of physicochemical principles of complex modification of hydration hardening materials with plasma-chemical surface treatment for creating structurally conjugate with matrix composite coatings."

Scientists of BSTU are the winners of the competitions and will receive in 2018 funds for research and achieve new heights in their subject.
