Students from Nigeria celebrate the Independence day

Federal Republic of Nigeria celebrates an Independence Day on the 1st of October.

More and more students from this African country choose Belgorod State Technological University named after V.G. Shukhov to proceed with their higher education program. This year the number of students from Nigeria increased to 21 and more students are expected.

From the first days at the University the students from Nigeria proved to be capable and diligent in their studies as well as extremely active in social events. By the 51th anniversary of their country’s Independence they had prepared a real gift to their homeland – a football tournament, an exhibition and a party, where they could tell their guests about major treasures of Nigeria: people, culture, history and resources. The preparations for the party had started well in advance. Since morning the Nigerian students from BSTU and Belgorod State University were busy with adjusting technical aids for the slide-show and music, cooking national food, laying the tables. They felt very responsible, as they had invited their Russian tutors, friends form many countries, including Russia, Ghana, France, Morocco, Kenya, Somali, Guyana, Angola and other countries studying at BSTU, Belgorod State University and Belgorod Agricultural Academy.

The party started with the national anthem and was followed by extremely interesting presentations about the history, culture and economics of Nigeria, supported by exciting slideshow and video. With great interest the guests were listening about 36 states of Nigeria, over 150 nationalities, having their own culture, language and clothes. The speakers’ stories were supported by national dances, demonstrating diversified cultural traditions of various corners in Nigeria and also a variety of national costumes. Even some Russian ladies were wearing Nigerian national dresses at the party.

It was very touching for the guests to learn how much the Nigerian students love their Motherland, how they are doing their best for the Motherland to be proud of them. The hall burst into applause, when everyone heard the names of BSTU students, the best football players, who, on the eve of Independence Day, had played against Ghana and Angola and won. Three students, who took much effort to win the cup, were given presents.

There was a message from the Centre of International education and cooperation, congratulating students with the 51th anniversary of independence of Federal Republic of Nigeria. The university management appreciates the students’ academic performance, their active social position. Special thanks were extended to students of Belgorod State University for their participation in BSTU events.

Finally the hospitable students offered their guests “to taste” Nigeria by having a national meal, which they had prepared in abundance. The guests were excited by warm and friendly atmosphere and were grateful to the students hosting the party for valuable information about their beautiful country.
