Military Department renamed military training center

The military department of the flagship university was officially renamed into the military training center of the BSTU named after V.G. Shukhov. Earlier, in August 2018, the President of Russia signed a federal law, which entered into force on January 31, 2019, according to which military departments at civilian universities are replaced by special military training centers.

Recall that from September 1, 2018, at the university, the military department began training citizens from among full-time students in training programs for sergeants, foremen and soldiers of the reserve. The department existing earlier at the university was restored on the basis of the Order of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 2790 of December 13, 2017; Presidential Decree number 6 of January 1, 2018. and in accordance with the decision of the academic council of the university (Minutes No. 7 of February 28, 2018).

The work done at the university’s military department has recently been discussed at a meeting in St. Petersburg of the university’s rector, Professor Sergey Glagolev, with the commander of the Western Military District, Colonel-General, Hero of Russia Alexander Zhuravlev.

Sergey Nikolaevich informed the commander about the work done and thanked the district command for their assistance in the development of the department. The parties discussed issues of material and technical support of the educational process, which require an operational solution. The working meeting was also attended by Vladimir Borisovskiy, Vice-Rector for Security of the University, and Lieutenant Colonel Maxim Timashev, Acting Head of the Military Department.

For reference: under the new federal law, a student under 24 years old who is fit for military service has the right to conclude an agreement with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for training at the Higher Educational Institute at a university for military service under a contract. At the end of the university, such a student receives an officer’s rank and is obliged to conclude a contract with the federal department, which provides for military service. If the graduate refuses the contract, he will have to refund the budget funds spent on his training.
