A Nobel Prize Winner awarded a Title of an Honorable Doctor of Belgorod State Technological University named after V.G. Shukhov

 

On October 4 BSTU named after V.G. Shukhov was visited by the delegation of Makerere University (Uganda). Among the 14 leading scholars and professors of the university was a Nobel Laureate, Professor Tom Otiti.
Representatives of Uganda Belgorod for the first time visited, so the tour of the university aroused great interest. The guests got acquainted with the work of the central control room - soon we are expecting the students from Uganda to study at BSTU, and it was necessary for the representatives to make sure that all of them will be safe. A fascinating tour through the halls of the university museum, held by T.L. Konoreva, a director of museum and exhibition complex, left no one indifferent. The history of technical education in Russia, the activities of V.G. Shukhov - everything found a lively response from the guests. A familiarization with the exposition prepared by students and teachers of children's art school resulted in numerous questions. The Resource Center of German and French languages introduced extracurricular activities aimed at strengthening friendship and cooperation between nations and different countries.
Sincere interest was expressed by the guests from Makerere University to the issues of nanotechnology in building materials. Great pleasure was visiting a sports complex, where the guests could see a handball competition, they were able to see a swimming pool as well.

    

Then the guests planted a rowan tree on the Alley of Friendship.
Familiarization with the university continued in the hall of the Academic Council, which brought together the heads of educational departments  of BSTU.

    

   

                                          


 


Welcoming the delegation, Vice-Rector on Research work of the University, Prof. E.I. Yevtushenko said, "Today we are receiving a delegation of the country, which is called by the scientists a cradle of humanity, the country which is deservedly considered the pearl of Africa - Uganda. Unfortunately, this pearl has not still been opened to the majority of the interested citizens of the world - both in tourism and  in the educational aspect ... On behalf of the staff of the University and myself, I welcome the guests and express hope that this meeting will be the next and important step in mutually beneficial international cooperation. "


Representatives of Makerere University with pride and love were telling the stories about their school, which is one of the oldest on the continent, its activity, management structure, areas of scientific activity. Vice Rector for Finance and Administration at Makerere University Sandy Stevens Tikodri Togboa, on behalf of the entire delegation, said: "In the city of Belgorod and BSTU we all noted a high culture and high discipline, which has a positive impact on the scientific work of the university. We admired a lot of what we have seen here. Many things we certainly will implement at our university. In the near future we will start working at preparing the students to study at Belgorod State Technological University ... "- he assured the audience. A number of teachers at Makerere University received higher education at universities in the former Soviet Union and kept the brightest memories of their schools. "Our common goal is to prepare people who can change a life, not only in Uganda, in Africa, but to make life better in the world", - said the speaker.


 E.I. Yevtushenko assured: "At our university, we are doing a lot of work to create that special atmosphere in which any person, regardless of nationality or skin color, feel at ease, comfortable, protected and safe. And today we are having a ceremony of awarding a title of a Honorary Doctor of BSTU to Professor of Physics, Tom Otiti. This event will undoubtedly expand and strengthen scientific and educational cooperation between our universities and our countries."
Nobel Laureate, Professor Tom Otiti was awarded a symbolic mantle of Honorary Doctor of BSTU.
The next day, the Honorary Doctor met with students and delivered a lecture dedicated to the development of energy and environmental protection. Students were also interested to learn about Uganda and its main university Mekerere.
Vice Rector for Finance and Administration at Makerere University Sandy Stevens Tikodri Togboa introduced the members of the delegation to young students. Also he presented by Professor Tom Otiti , who received the "Nobel Prize" in 2007 for his contribution into the research in the protection of the environment, climate change caused by human activity. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was joined by Tom Otiti, who published reports on the relevant subject. Together with teh scientists from Russia, USA, China, he is working on a research project for spreading clean technologies throughout the world. In his latest book, prof. Otiti and his colleagues have shown that the sector of residential, industrial and other buildings have contributed significantly to global warming. Also Professor Tom Otiti is working on the problems of using solar energy.
Such events lead to greater interaction between universities, expansion of international scientific and educational space.
The guests also are going to visit Belgorod diorama museum "The Kursk Battle" and historical military complex in Prokhorovka field.
